The people of Kauai have always known that we can grow beautiful orchids on this island. However, now the word has spread throughout the Orchid world, for in their July magazine "Orchids", the American Orchid Society published two articles entitled "Orchids on Kauai" and "Orchids with Aloha". The articles featured our well-known larger growers: Hanalei Orchids, Hawaiian Orchid Source, Kauai Orchids, Orchid Alley, Yamada Orchid Nursery, Anykineomiyagi and Nakama Orchids.
However, the articles did not cover the many Kauai orchid hobbyists who grow orchids successfully in their back yards in gardens not normally seen from the streets. Their orchids are growing in concrete pots, are attached to tree trunks and branches, are clinging to rock walls and are planted in rock gardens in the ground.
Our show "Orchids in Paradise", at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair in August 2011, will give you a peek at what one of these gardens might look like, for our theme will be our "Secret Garden". You will see all of your favorites: cattleya, dendrobiums, cymbidiums, vandas and many more.
